Dr. Scott Massey: Pioneering Predictive Scoring in PA Education

With over 30 years of experience in PA education, Dr. Scott Massey has been a trailblazer in the field, dedicating his career to advancing student success. From his early education, receiving an Associate in Science degree in PA in 1987, to his Ph.D. in Leadership in 2004, and attending the prestigious Harvard Leadership Program in 2008, Dr. Massey has continuously refined his expertise in both clinical practice and educational leadership. Serving as program director at four different PA programs, including his most recent role at Central Michigan University, and leading research at the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of PA Studies, Dr. Massey has amassed unparalleled knowledge of the PA education system, making him a trusted authority in this space.

Recognizing the challenges programs face in predicting student success on certification exams, Dr. Massey set out to develop a data-driven approach that could provide early insights into student performance. Beginning in 2008, he and his research team gathered data from five different programs, applying regression analysis to variables like the PACKRAT and end-of-rotation exams. This pioneering work led to the creation of the first
Predictive Scoring model, which has since been fine-tuned through thousands of data points. Now, the system accurately predicts exam outcomes with over 80% certainty, identifying at-risk students and categorizing them into fail, alarm, or critical risk levels—allowing programs to intervene at the right time with tailored support.

Dr. Massey’s Predictive Scoring system has transformed how PA programs approach student success, and it continues to shape the future of education. By integrating this model with student success coaching and intervention programs, he has provided PA programs with a much-needed tool for improving pass rates and supporting students in their educational journey.
